El Esteco ‘Don David’ Cabernet Sauvignon

£17.25 / per bottle

Tasting Notes

A perennial favourite with our guests. El Esteco are one of the biggest wineries in Cafayate, and very modern. This wine is smoky, with a touch of graphite and very peppery. Cabernet from Salta is often peppery due to the high pyrazine levels and thick skins. Medium bodied, with ripe black fruits and a touch of Five-spice. Crunchy black fruits and a little grip on the finish.

Cafayate, Salta

A four hour drive South from the colonial city of Salta, you will witness some of the most epic vistas of the Calchaqui valley. The town, a must – see visit if you are in Argentina, is the centre of wine-making in this beautiful province. With just 33 wineries in the region, it represents a small proportion of Argentina’s gigantic wine output, but remains important as being one of the true, terroir – specific wine regions of the world. The altitude ranges from 1700 to 1850m above sea level. Cafayate is the rightful home to Torrontes, Argentina’s own indigenous white grape varietal, but also makes world class Tannat and of course Malbec. Big, bold and intense wines, with a wild and sometimes rustic feel to them, Cafayate punches way above its weight when it comes to quality, and I must admit, I have a real soft spot for this ethereal and beautiful place.
